Welcome to Grade 6!

Welcome back to an exciting new year!  I hope that you had an enjoyable summer and are ready to start the year.  I am looking forward to teaching all of you and I am excited to have you in 6B!

You will have a variety of teachers this year.

Mrs. Sargunaraj – French

Mrs. Deas – Music

Mrs. Reid and Mr. Fines – Health

Things to look forward to:

-       Language Arts – We will be doing weekly language activities using the thesaurus and dictionary.  We will also cover weekly writing and reading comprehension activities.  We will be doing 2 novel study units.

-       Math – This month we will be learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  We will be starting off with simple activities and working our way through more complex activities and problem solving.

-       Science – We will start the year off with the Trees and Forests unit.  Other units we will be covering are: Sky science, Air and Aerodynamics, Flight and Evidence and investigation.

-       Social Studies – We will be studying government this year.  We will be discussing what it means to be a decision maker.  We will also be looking at taking part in democracy.

Things to remember:

Homework Books:  All students must have a homework book.  An agenda or a scribbler, marked for just this purpose, may be used.  An agenda may be purchased at the office.  The students need them to help remember to do their homework and keep up with the class.  These books are extremely important, as they help keep lines of communication open between the school and the parents.  It is important to remember that homework must be completed and handed in on time.  Homework will be posted daily and it will be your child’s responsibility to write it in his/her agenda daily.  A parent’s signature is required daily.

Locks: Your child should have a combination lock this year.  The locks, which the school sells, are of good quality and of a reasonable price.  We do keep a record of the combination in case a child forgets it.  Key locks are not a good idea, as keys tend to get misplaced or lost.  As a result, the lock has to be cut off.  Any faulty locks that have been purchased through the school will be replaced providing they were purchased this year.

Lunches: The students are not allowed to leave the school grounds for lunch without written permission.

We do have a microwave in the classroom for use at lunchtime.  Please do not send any food that takes more than one minute to heat as students are only given twenty minutes to eat lunch.

Please check our monthly calendar for upcoming events.
